No Travel Restriction
Unlike bankruptcy — which can, in certain circumstances, require permission to travel — an IVA places no formal restriction on international travel. You are free to travel abroad during your IVA for holidays, work, or any other reason.
Practical Considerations
While there is no formal travel restriction, there are practical things to consider:
- Maintaining payments: Ensure your bank account has sufficient funds to cover your IVA monthly payment while you are away. Missing a payment can put your IVA at risk.
- Income changes: If you work abroad and your income changes, inform your IP promptly.
- Extended stays: If you are considering living or working abroad for an extended period, speak to your IP in advance. Residency changes can affect the legal jurisdiction of your IVA.
Moving Abroad Permanently
If you are considering relocating permanently to another country during your IVA, this is a more complex situation that requires careful legal advice. Your IVA is governed by the law of England and Wales (or Northern Ireland) and moving abroad does not end your obligations under it. Your IP should be informed immediately of any planned permanent move.
Short-term travel: A holiday or business trip abroad is completely fine during an IVA. Just make sure your IVA payments continue on time and you inform your IP of anything significant that could affect your finances.
